Middle East Technical University (METU), together with its units, staff, and students, adopts and upholds universal values such as equality, inclusivity, respect for human dignity, and fairness for all individuals. Within this framework, METU respects differences and opposes all forms of discrimination.

Raising Awareness

METU recognizes gender inequality as a societal issue and aims to increase awareness among its units, members, students, and all individuals working or living on campus. To achieve this, the University promotes the adoption and implementation of Communication and Gender Equality Principles; offers courses and seminars for students and staff on related topics; organizes meetings and workshops; and informs university members and the public through announcements and public service messages, with the goal of transforming negative practices and approaches.

Ensuring Gender Equality in Representation and Participation

In academic and administrative units, student and colleague activities, and both formal and informal structures and assignments, it is essential that appointments are merit-based while ensuring gender equality in representation and participation. Regular assessments should be conducted to identify practices that create gender inequality, with the results reported and equality targets established. A sensitive approach to the different experiences and needs of female and male (academic and administrative) staff, especially during parenthood, is encouraged, supporting the positive involvement of both groups in decision-making and responsibilities.

Prevention of Sexual Harassment and Assault

The prevention and elimination of all forms of sexual harassment and assault is fundamental. No individual or institutional tolerance is acceptable in this regard. Measures in this area include preventing sexual harassment and assault, raising awareness, ensuring safe working and living environments through physical arrangements, receiving complaints, conducting investigations promptly and carefully, and activating support mechanisms.

For these purposes, the Middle East Technical University Gender Equality Action and Sexual Harassment Prevention Unit will operate.
